If you thought white-truffle season was winding down, think again. Restaurateur Tony May of SD26 just bought himself a 2.6 pound, $5,000 fungus — a “bargain,” according to the restaurant, and also one of the largest truffles to come out of Italy’s Monferrato area in the last decade. If you want to gawk at, or maybe sniff, this monster, it’ll be on display at the restaurant all next week, until being sacrificed for a collection of special holiday dishes. If that sounds good, it’s not too late to make a reservation at the restaurant for Christmas Eve.
