Veering from the usual openings/closings/chef reportage in the Chron’s Inside Scoop print column today, Mr. Lucchesi shares with us some recent stories of crime fighting and heroism on the part of Ozumo’s director of hospitality Mel Collins. Collins was solely responsible for apprehending a pickpocket recently who’d been plaguing other Embarcadero restaurants like Boulevard, One Market, and RN74. On another recent evening, Collins ran outside after hearing a report of a dead man in the street, only to find a dead-drunk dude hanging out of a car and being strangled by his own seat belt. “The onetime boxer sprang into action, doing the only thing he could think of: He slapped the guy, essentially reviving him.” This slap, according to a fire marshal, was a lifesaver.
