Fatta Cuckoo to Bring Italian-American Grandmother Food to the Lower East Side

Following in the footsteps of fried-chicken oddball Patate Fellow, the equally bizarrely named Fatta Cuckoo will debut soon at 63 Clinton Street. Owners Martin Kirchoff and his wife have both worked in bars and restaurants for years, and they want to open a neighborhood spot where “the martinis don’t cost $14,” Kirchoff told us. In addition to reasonably priced wine and cocktails, the restaurant will serve “seasonal American food with an Italian influence,” with a menu from Kirchoff’s mother-in-law, chef-owner of the eponymous Janice Bistro in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. Brett Ackerman, a veteran of Marlow & Sons and Diner, will be in charge of wielding the backyard-grown veggies on a daily basis. Though we found the spot still very much under construction, Kirchoff told us he hopes to open soon after Christmas. And about the name? It’s a “Neopolitan cockney” phrase Kirchoff’s grandmother used to say that literally means “to make crazy.”
