Chris Daly Takes Over Buck Tavern Today, Launches Hard-Left Gin Joint

Outgoing supervisor Chris Daly, as we mentioned last week, is indeed taking the helm at Buck Tavern, but won’t be changing the name to Daly’s Dive or doing any remodeling unless he can come to some better long-term lease agreement with the landlord. Tonight’s the night for Daly and partner Ted Strawser’s debut behind the bar, and as Daly notes on San Francisco Sentinel, he hopes that his fellow liberals and progressive will drop in to drink and discuss important issues amongst their own.

To wit:

“This Fall, Drinking Liberally and several other informal progressive circles have found a home at Buck Tavern, and I am committed to continuing to foster these discussions as well as many others. In addition, our public house will be committed to supporting the grassroots efforts for social and economic justice that I have been associated with in this town for nearly 2 decades.”

So though they will serve whiskey — and we have found that whiskey does not necessarily aid in intelligent political discussion, but does aid in making it more passionate and long-winded — this won’t be just your average neighborhood bar (or the mostly gay bar that Buck Tavern began as). This will be a bar for progressives, by progressives, and Daly is not hanging up his political hat just because he’s opening a bar.
