In a trend piece in the Journal today about San Francisco’s restaurant scene, we learn that several newish restaurants around town are “courting diners with less expensive dishes and comfort food, a way of reminding people of easier times.” The only thing is, the “comfort food” thing has been a staple of menus in the Bay Area (and everywhere) since, like, 2001 when the world was falling apart. So the idea that Wayfare Tavern’s “dressed up comfort food” and Barbacco’s braised chicken thigh dish are signs of the times doesn’t exactly ring true. In other snoozeflashes, restaurant tabs are generally lower than they used to be, and no one’s ordering wine at lunch anymore at Boulevard.
