Buy tamales from Tamara’s, Mom’s, Los Cinco Puntos, or an icebox on the street and you might eat for a week. Learn how to make a tamale for $90, and eat for a lifetime. Something like that. Nancy Zaslavsky, author of the OG tome A Cook’s Tour to Mexico is offering two holiday classes to teach people how to manage their masa to make real Mexican tamales. The chef is taking a small group of students through the basics, with appearances in Westlake Village and one at Culver City’s Surfas. Classes cover a hands-on prep of beef tamales from Jalisco, vegetarian chile and black bean tamales, and banana leaf-wrapped chicken chipotle, along with guacamole, hot chocolate, and salsa sessions, plus a tequila and mezcal tasting. See the full schedule of Zaslavsky’s classes below and make reservations, as they tend to be snatched up quickly.
