Notes From the Underground: DOH Closes Illegal Restaurant, Grilled-Cheese Guy Lays Low

In the New York episode of Jamie’s American Roadtrip, which we’re told will premiere in the U.S. next year, Jamie Oliver hits up an illegal Peruvian restaurant in a Jackson Heights apartment. The name of the place isn’t given (though this blog post from last year indicates one at 84th and Northern Boulevard), so it’s uncertain whether the place still exists. This much is for sure: Taste of Hawthorne, the weekend restaurant run out of a Lefferts Garden backyard, has been shut down by the Health Department, according to the Brooklyn Paper. So much for being “champions of community and local businesses,” as proprietresses Patrice Carter and Doreen Simpson were described (the not-officially-a-restaurant was also featured on City Room last month, which may explain why it got on the DOH’s radar).

There’s this, too: According to its Facebook page, the underground grilled-cheese operation, Bread.Butter.Cheese, is on hiatus after a “devastating hand injury” was sustained and one of the partners got a proper food-service job. “BBC can no longer be a daily operation,” says the proprietor via a Facebook update. “I’ll still do catering jobs and special events, though!”
