In the wake of super-conglomerates gobbling up super-conglomerates, D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc., makers of the veritable lifeblood that courses through this city and its surrounding communities, has gone from being simply America’s oldest brewery to one of its largest. And now, according to The Wall Street Journal, Yuengling is gearing up for a huge expansion. Dick Yuengling, the fifth generation brewer and sole owner of the Pottsville brewery, recently signed a letter of intent to purchase a former Coors brewing facility in Memphis, TN that will ultimately double the company’s capacity, which will allow it to expand its reach beyond the 13 East Coast states where its currently poured. In all likelihood this means that when Hollywood decides to finally remake Smokey and the Bandit, the story will revolve around a truck full of Lager being smuggled out to a western state.
