Jonathan Gold, Sang Yoon, Eric Greenspan, Akasha Richmond, and Karen Hatfield were among the eight judges this past Sunday as Evan Kleiman concluded her 2nd Annual KCRW Good Food Pie Contest during the Taste of Beverly Hills event. Faced with 122 pies, judges awarded seventeen different ribbons among categories like “best interpretative,” which went to a pluot pie with almond cream and almond shortbread crust, down to the details like choosing which pie had the “best crust” and “best fruit.” Who took home “Best of Show?”

Emerging from the battlefield was the above meat pie, which took both “best in show” and “best savory” honors, made by Yuichiro Sato, a student from Japan whose friends urged him to enter, a rep from KCRW tells us. Kleiman noted that this prized pie-man was taking it back to pie’s very roots, as the first appearance of the dinner table dessert staple was as a “humble meat pie.” Currently, the crew is waiting for a recipe from Sato, as his English is slightly limited, but expect it to appear on the station’s website.
