George Abou-Daoud just can’t sit still. While still riding the wave of his most recent Hollywood restaurants, Mercantile and District, today he debuts a new gelato and wine bar mash-up, GelatoVino. This isn’t a new space for Abou-Daoud—it’s actually his diminutive Wine Room tucked between Delancey and Mission Cantina on Sunset Boulevard. But now, instead of charcuterie and wine flights, he’s serving 24 different flavors of gelato, all custom-made locally, plus dessert wines. And the booze isn’t just for drinking, here.
For the gelato, expect traditional flavors like vanilla, strawberry, pistachio and chocolate, plus some unique ones like Earl Grey tea, sour cherry-chevre, and almond-fig. There’s also an array of seasonal sorbets. But things get really interesting with spiked flavors like the bitter-orange Campari, beer-flavored Downtown Brown, Sambuca-espresso, and minty Fernet Branca Mente.
In addition to the frozen desserts, there are about 12 dessert wines by the glass for pairing. A scoop of gelato and a glass of port? Why not. But what about gelato in port. “Sure, I can see that,” Abou-Daoud says.
GelatoVino starts scooping today at noon, with plans to stay open until midnight daily.
