Italian Superior Bakery, at 933 S. Western near Taylor Street, is the kind of vintage neighborhood bakery that could easily have vanished into history when its owners reached retirement age a few years ago. Instead, new owners retained the old bread recipes and equipment, and have now added a sunny cafe where they serve muffuletta sandwiches (on their own bread, of course), salads, traditional-style sheet pizza, and pastas, as well as a complete range of pastries baked in house. It’s a cheerful example of how you can update an old business while still keeping plenty of Italian neighborhood atmosphere and flavor. Here’s what you can grab for lunch just a few minutes from the Loop, yet a million miles away at the same time.
