Spend Labor Day Weekend Binging on Pie and Pancakes

Is speed-eating becoming a Labor Day tradition? In addition to offering an all-you-can-eat barbecue for $10, Astoria bar Hell Gate Social is holding a pie-eating contest on September 5. Entrance is free so long as you’re one of the first twelve to show up and register (by 5 p.m.) — the winner of the 6 p.m. contest gets a $50 bar tab. If you still have room the next day, Jo’s is holding its first annual Labor Day F*cking Delicious Pancake Eating Contest, in which “amateur” competitive eaters who register online will have five minutes to stuff their faces in an attempt to win a $250 AmEx gift card. Our advice: For the sake of your waistline, skip the eating competitions and enter a cooking competition instead. Details of the Brooklyn Roots Experiment (a Brooklyn-themed cook-off to be judged by Frank Castronovo from the Frankies restaurants) have just been released.
