If all this talk about rooftop gardens has you curious, you can learn more during a field trip to the city’s 5-Boro Technical Services Complex on Randall’s Island, site of one of the city’s largest green roofs. The Parks Department is testing over twenty different systems side-by-side (e.g., elevated planters, overhead trellises, tray systems, pre-vegetated modular systems, cedar planter boxes, etc.), and recently added a 4,000-square-foot vegetable garden to the expanded roof. For meet-up details (a bus will leave from Manhattan around 3 p.m. on August 20), RSVP to Doug Elliott at the Parks Department or call 212-788-8277.
