Ah, Morningside Heights, you’ve come a long way since the humble days of Tom’s Diner! Tomorrow the neighborhood gets its very own burger bar, care of Mel’s. Owners Nick Tsoulos and Nick Pashalis (Patsy’s Pizza, Goodburger) have borrowed a few pages from the Bill’s Bar and Burger playbook (LaFrieda burgers, grouper sandwiches, and spiked milkshakes!) and another page from Five Napkin Burger (that restaurant’s designer, Roy Nachum, contributed a six-foot sign). And they’re nodding to a more venerable burger joint, self-declared “birthplace of the hamburger sandwich,” Louis’ Lunch of Connecticut, with a burger on white toast. At least they decided against using White Castle’s slogan in their wall decorations, as you can see in the slideshow.
Six flat-screens aim to distract Columbia students from their studies, and to-go growlers ensure they have something to take back to the dorms. Check out our slideshow and peruse the food and beer menus below.
