Sandwich Addict 911! Ike’s May Finally Have to Vacate on August 26

The Ike’s Place saga looks to be reaching its end, just as die-hard sandwich-eaters have been forking over $20 for ’Free Ike’ t-shirts (modeled, naturally, after the ‘Free Winona’ t-shirts) and continuing to line up for hours for sandwiches in the freezing cold summer weather. As the Chron reports, a judge this week handed Ike Shehadeh an eviction notice effective on August 26, at which point the County sheriff will arrive to kick him out, and the Ike’s faithful may resort to creating a human shield and/or rioting.

There is, however, still a small possibility that the decision could be reconsidered due to a procedural error. It turns out that it was the landlord (under pressure from those cranky upstairs neighbors) that turned Ike in to the city regarding that permitting issue, and now Steve Adams, president of the Merchants of Upper Market and Castro, is doing everything he can to help Ike find a new space to keep him in the ‘hood. “We’re totally supporting him. He’s a destination.”
