Bauer Calls Comstock a ‘Special Kind of Place’

For his Sunday review, Michael Bauer hits up Comstock Saloon (155 Columbus), the recently opened North Beach bar with a full food menu of modernized, turn-of-the-twentieth-century-style recipes from chef Carlo Espinas. Though his biggest compliments go to Jonny Raglin and Jeff Hollinger’s drinks (“some of the best in the city”), he also enjoys the beef and bone marrow pot pie, the crispy fried fava beans, and the pickled egg over rye toast (“Accompanied by the Manhattan with the rich sting of bourbon and the touch of sweet vermouth, it raises bar food to new heights.”). He says much of the food is too salty, but he still awards the place two and a half stars for food, and two stars overall. [Chron]
