Boston Gets a Food Czar

Mayor Menino named Edith Murnane as Boston’s first-ever food policy director yesterday, reports the Globe. Murnane is best known as the chef and owner of Jamaica Plain’s now-defunct Cantata, which occupied the space now held by Bon Savor. She’s also worked in marketing for Milk Street Cafe and managed Community Servings’ sustainable food programs. As Boston’s food czar, Murnane will work on improving access to fresh and healthy foods, overseeing school lunches, and expanding the city’s urban farming efforts, which were praised by Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius just last week.
