Apparently we’re not the only ones with their minds on midday meals. Los Angeles magazine just released a new “Lunch Time!” issue for the month of June. Inside you’ll find ten recommendations for food truck dishes that might actually be worth the hunt, as well as seventeen sandwich suggestions, fifteen of which aren’t on our own list of great L.A. sandwiches. You’ll also learn where to get a gourmet lunch on the cheap through $20-and-under pre-fixe menus at spots like Hatfield’s and Comme Ca. There’s also a board-game style map tailoring lunch experiences to personality types, a collection of worthy food courts, and an attempt at revitalizing the three martini lunch. Overall, Los Angeles unleashes a packed issue that just about makes up for that late, lackluster “Best New Restaurants” issue released in March. Except for maybe one thing.
We look forward to the too-rare reviews of Patrick Kuh, a trained chef and elegant wordsmith who, unlike many of our local scribes, isn’t afraid to dish some dirt on a place if he’s unhappy eating there. Rather than enlighten us with a look at a new restaurant, Kuh was put on food truck duty for this issue, pondering the variety of cuisines available, slamming a closing Kogi for its lack of contrition, using the term “roach coach,” and retelling the story of food trucks in L.A. Like the Best Of issue, there’s really nothing new here for the already initiated. Surely, a critic as talented as Kuh should be used much better, especially in an otherwise excellent food issue.
