Those who have experienced the distinct thrill of living where the 10 Freeway meets LaCienega Blvd. likely remember, or are likely trying to forget, Sammy’s Grill in the Thriftown Market. The Mexican eatery was replaced about two weeks ago by Ray’s Kitchen, now serving a selection of red-checker pastas, five-ounce burgers, ten-dollar fish and chicken dishes, and sandwiches, from a grilled chicken pesto to a cold avocado and Jack on wheat. Lest someone miss the Mex here, Ray’s offers asada and chicken tortas, tacos, and burritos, though the lengua and pastor appear to be gone. There’s also free delivery within the area, which would mean missing Thriftown’s lackluster-to-shady ambiance. Still, an Italian-American-Mexican restaurant in a corner liquor store is one of those phenomenons we imagine only happens in L.A., so we’ll save it for that special category and wave on the way down to J.R.’s BBQ.
