Philly’s Last Beer Baron Heads for the Great Brewery in the Sky

William H. Pflaumer, beer baron and owner of Philadelphia’s venerable Schmidt’s Brewing Co., the pride of Philadelphia for more than 100 years, died last Saturday. Known as “Billy the Beer King,” he had a reputation for questionable business practices and was convicted for tax evasion in 1983. He went to prison in 1986, the Schmidt’s brand was sold to G. Heileman Brewing Co., and the brewery was shuttered. Today the 28-acre site is home to the Piazza at Schmidts. [Inquirer]
