Check Please! Kicks Off New Season at Brown Sugar Kitchen

KQED’s Check Please!, the show in which citizen reviewers nominate their favorite restaurants and do tandem, televised reviews, feels like it dates back to the 70’s — but they just kicked off their fifth season last night. Think of it like Yelp, PBS-style, with video and an actual round-table discussion in which no tedious tangents are allowed.

The first episodes’ guest reviewers, joining host and wine writer Leslie Sbrocco, are courthouse employee Denise Coleman, who picks the Turk & Larkin Deli; DJ and “budding actor” Evan Hirsch, who chooses Castro mainstay 2223; and insurance company attorney David DeMourdant chooses Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland, whose waffles he says are the “best in the universe.”

Below, the only one of the three reviews we cared to listen to, for Brown Sugar Kitchen, featuring a brief interview with chef-owner Tanya Holland.
