Rising Star Chef of the Year
“A chef age 30 or younger who displays an impressive talent and who is likely to have a significant impact on the industry in years to come.” Recent winners include Nate Appleman, Gavin Kaysen, and David Chang.
Timothy Hollingsworth, The French Laundry, Yountville, California
For Him: The San Francisco Chronicle named Hollingsworth a rising star already, and he is under Thomas Keller’s watchful guidance. Hollingsworth repped the U.S. in the Bocuse d’or in 2009 — exactly as 2008 Rising Star winner Gavin Kaysen did.
Against Him: Almost nothing.
Johnny Monis, Komi, Washington D.C.
For Him: Nominated twice previously for this award, and in his last year of eligibility. The Washington Post called him “one of the youngest food stars in the community.” Named a Food & Wine Best New Chef in 2007.
Against Him: Timothy Hollingsworth
Gregory Pugin, Veritas, New York City
For Him: Grew up in France and worked under Joël Robuchon — “you couldn’t ask for better credentials,” Alan Richman wrote in 2008 .
Against Him: First nomination and a low profile in New York.
Gabriel Rucker, Le Pigeon, Portland, Oregon
For Him: Third consecutive nomination in this category. Named a Food & Wine Best New Chef in 2007. Cooks with offal.

Sue Zamanick, Gautreau’s, New Orleans
For Her: Nominated in this category in 2009. Named Best New Chef in 2008. New Orleans Magazine named her “Chef of the Year” in 2008.
