A sixth new chef-driven restaurant was announced this morning for the August return of Santa Monica Place, which suddenly feels soon enough to get stoked. Jeremy Umland, founder of NorCal’s Japanese Ozumo, is opening Sonoma Wine Garden on the mall’s much ballyhooed Dining Deck, which is dedicated solely to eating and drinking. Sonoma will be a wine-cellar-styled bar with a chandelier made from bottles and centered on views of the surrounding seaside neighborhood as well as outdoor space that is heavy on olive trees and organic gardening beds. In addition to Northern Cali vintages of vino, as well as some global selections and house wine on tap, there will be small plates on Sonoma Garden’s menu, as well as fresh pasta, charcuterie, and cheese. As previously reported, Umland is also bringing a version of Ozumo here on August 6th, making us ever more satisfied to have at least a few locals like Curious Palate and King’s Road Cafe to balance out the carpetbaggers newcomers.
