Chinatown Gets Two Bright New Bakeries

Photo: Daniel Maurer

A couple of bakeries have opened in Chinatown. At 150 Mott Street, Queen Bakery has replaced our dearly departed Rainbow Café with a modest, familiar variety of buns (coconut, custard, etc.), cakes, and you tiao (or as we prefer to call the Chinese churros, yau ja gwai, or “oil-fried devil”). Meanwhile, Golden Manna comes from the folks who own Manna House, which lost its Grand Street lease last month.

The third location of the chainlet (fourth counting the shuttered Grand Street spot) offers more of the same (namely, about a hundred varieties of rolls, buns, breads, and cakes) along with a more spacious seating area than the Grand Street takeout operation had.
