Calling All Tequila Mixologists to Battle at Ortega 120

Ortega 120, winner of L.A. Weekly’s “Best Classic Margarita,” is holding its first amateur tequila mixology competition on May 3rd in Redondo Beach. The contest is being called “Toma Tequila,” but fortunately (as we’ll help judge the thing with Feast and Food GPS), it is not a tequila-drinking contest, but a call for creatives to submit their best tequila-based cocktail recipes. Three finalists will be chosen to compete, mixing their drinks in person for the assembled panel of pros. One winner will receive an editorial feature in Mutineer Magazine, $250 in Ortega 120 gift certificates, and see their drink put on the menu, which might help or hinder its chances with the Weekly next year. Ortega has a week of agave-laden events leading up to its Cinco de Mayo bash, with May 4th’s “Tequila University” your best bet if you seek to take “Toma Tequila” honors in 2011.
