At the start of this month, Jonathan Gold wrote that Sherman Oaks’ Marche is at the fulcrum of a cooking-style that “is taking over the local restaurant world.” Unfortunately, an economy that owner Andre Guerrero describes as “brutal,” plus a lack of constant customers, is pushing the restaurant to close only eight months after replacing Max Restaurant and putting Palate’s Gary Menes in the kitchen. Squid Ink reports that Menes is now fielding offers while Guerrero will focus on establishing a second location of The Oinkster, which he announced after abandoning plans to retool Glassell Park’s Buttertart Bakery. Marche’s official closing date is set for May 8th, at which point the space will be used as a test kitchen for The Oinkster’s second coming. Marche might not have captured all of L.A., but it’s fresher-than-fresh, carefully-sourced simplicity, as well as its uber-talented chef, will both certainly re-emerge soon. We only hope we don’t lose Menes to another city.
