Sardine Cannery Goes Belly-Up While Salmon Smokehouse Swims On

Today, the AP relays the sad news that, despite Grub Street’s pro-sardine rally cry, the country’s last sardine cannery, Stinson Seafood, is closing owing to tighter fishing quotas in the northeast and decreased demand for the small, smelly fish that Frank Bruni so dislikes (not that we’re blaming him personally — Alan Richman recently admitted to disliking them, too). Sigh. At least the Samaki Smoked Fish is still alive and well, and smoking salmon for Russ & Daughters and Barney Greengrass, among others. Food Curated offers a video tour of the Port Jarvis plant today.
