We told you last month about Local, the casual Mission eatery from former Fish & Farm exec chef Jake Des Voignes and Yaron Milgrom, the medieval Jewish mysticism scholar turned restaurateur. Well, they opened for lunch yesterday, serving several noteworthy sandwiches a day until 6 p.m. (today’s menu included a scrumptious and original braised lamb shoulder sandwich with smoked greens and cara cara preserves), as well as soup, salad, house-made sodas, and Jake’s famed pickle plate which he’s carried over from his former venue. Jake’s wife, Shauna, formerly the pastry chef at RN74, has opened her own patisserie in back called Knead, serving Four Barrell coffee and a selection of sweets daily.
In addition to offering cooking classes starting next Wednesday night, the team plans to serve dinner out of their open kitchen starting April 1st (they’re already booked), doing one seating with a prix fixe menu each Thursday and Saturday night, offering the ultimate chef’s table and counter experience to 32 diners at once — including ten at a communal table which has not yet arrived. They’ll expand to two seatings a night, but Milgrom says they want to keep to the concept of everyone sitting down and eating at the same time, inspired in part by Daniel Rose’s tiny Paris restaurant, Spring, which was itself inspired by California cuisine.
If the food is anything like the sandwiches, this is bound to be the hottest ticket in town.
