Surprising and discouraging news from Downtown: chef Gabriel Morales’ Provecho restaurant is facing eviction after the company that owns it, 800 Wilshire Group, filed for bankruptcy protection recently among accusations that it wasn’t paying its rent. According to BlogDowntown, Provecho owes the state back taxes totaling nearly $144,000, its landlord over $30,000 in back rent, and has a long list of vendors trying to get paid for services, leading to a court ruling this week that allows Provecho’s landlord to go-ahead with eviction proceedings. Blogdowntown suggests that Provecho’s opening, delayed almost a year and a half, might have added to the bad financial position, as Morales has garnered encouraging reviews from local critics and diners alike. We hate to lose Provecho, but are positive the talented toque will be a treasured asset wherever he lands. Update: Provecho co-owner and Morales spouse Jill Bigelow emails us: “Provecho is under intense negotiations with its landlord and is diligently working on a plan to reorganize its lease to meet the expectations of the landlord as well as reflect the current economic climate.”
