Does the South End Have Too Many Sandwich Shops?

South End residents Ken Hassett and David McFarlane will open The Wholy Grain, a healthy bakery and deli on Shawmut Ave, reports the Herald. The Wholy Grain will serve “artisan-style breads, fresh in-house roasted meats and prepared meals to go,” says Hassett, and is a spin-off of a restaurant owned by Hassett’s brothers in Ireland. There will be patio seating.

This all sounds lovely, but, by our count, this will be the eighteenth sandwich shop in the South End and that list doesn’t even include the forthcoming Don Otto’s, which will also have an ample sandwich selection. Everyone loves a sandwich, but this seems a bit out of control, no?
