Whither Dungeness Crab Week?

Last year’s Dungeness Crab Week, which we thought should be recurring right about now, turns out not to be an annual thing. A spokesperson at SF.Chefs.Food.Wine, who organized the fest last year as a kind of teaser for their big August event in Union Square, says they decided to cancel the multi-restaurant crab bake because it turned out to be more hassle than it was worth. “Some of the restaurants were more proactive than others,” she said, “and for some it seemed like more of a burden.”

Nevertheless, the now annual Celebrity Crab Crack hosted by the Union Square Business Improvement District went on as planned last week, and 49ers wide receiver Josh Morgan came out victorious.

SF.Chefs is putting together a similar August blowout to last year, starting the second week in August, and they would be open to doing another Dungeness Crab Week at the height of the season in 2011. But that will depend on some more curmudgeony chefs stepping up to the plate.
