In just a few hours, Piazza at Schmidts puppetmaster Bart Blatstein will break ground on another phase of his Northern Liberties reinvention project, a 100,000-square-foot retail center at 2nd Street and Girard Avenue, which will feature a 50,000-square-foot Pathmark. The Shops at Schmidts, as the new section will be called, will also include the neighborhood basics like a bank and a hardware store.

The Inquirer’s Inga Saffron has details on the architecture of the badly needed supermarket, which will be located on the second floor of the development. It will be called the “Pathmark Save-A-Center” and, according to the press release fluff, will offer “local, sustainable product featuring a wide selection of quality groceries, fresh produce, breads, deli, seafood, meats as well as a host of prepared foods to go.” It’s expected to be complete in “late 2010.” But will Blatstein give Pathmark the boot if they fail to meet his criteria for coolness?
