You’ll recall, of course, that Mercat a la Planxa chef Jose Garces blazed his way to victory on the most recent season of The Next Iron Chef, earning himself a spot as a regular in the Food Network’s Kitchen Stadium. The bi-civic chef celebrated that win with a viewing party in Philadelphia, home to his other restaurants. So for his first foray into Kitchen Stadium, it’s only fitting that he bring the festivities home to Chicago, with a viewing party at Mercat when his first episode of Iron Chef America airs this Sunday.
“We didn’t do anything in Chicago for Next Iron Chef, so I thought it was appropriate to do it for the first Iron Chef episode,” Garces told Grub Street. “I have a lot of close friends and family in Chicago and my dad lives there.” The evening comes complete with stations serving up the some of the dishes he makes in the episode (naturally, the menu is hush-hush), flowing cocktails, and of course the chef himself working the room and signing cookbooks. “It’s quite an event,” Garces told us. “Everyone will be able to see the show and then taste what we made. It’s kind of a big to-do over there!”
The January 17th party kicks off at 6 p.m., with the show airing on the big screen at 8 p.m. Tickets, $75, are available by calling 312 765 0524 — and hurry, the restaurant assures us they’re going fast.
