Will Tacos Define 2010?

On Friday, when news broke that Laiola would permanently morph into Tacolicious, 7x7’s Jessica Battilana wrote a post asserting that 2010 will be the “year of the taco” in San Francisco. “Oddly, while SF has long been known for its stellar taquerias, until Mijita came along, few people had taken to serving up tacos up with some San Francisco values (the LSO thing—or local, sustainable, organic),” Battilana wrote. And while this is true, it seems a little thin to assert that because of two new virtuous taquerias (Mijitas no. 2 and Tacolicious, co-owned by 7x7 editor Sara Deseran) slated to open in 2010, that year will be defined by tacos.

Foodies will remember 2009 as a year of pizza joints and mobile vendors because approximately 900 million of each opened up here. Two new taquerias aren’t going to leave that much of an impression, regardless of how sustainable, local, or organic they are. Still, we don’t think the city has come close to a critical mass of taquerias, so trend-defining or not, we’ll welcome two more options.
