Vendor’s Deportation Plight Sparks Strangely Vicious Blog War

The recent travails of Amuse Bouche vendor and French national Murat Celebi-Ariner have given rise to a brutal snark war between SFoodie and Mission Mission. After Mission Mission’s Kevin Montgomery called out bloggers for “losing their collective shit” over Murat’s plight (“a fucking insult to everyone that has to fight to be here illegally”) he went on to run a story from a reader about someone who was detained with what sounds like a lot more force and less recourse than Murat. This prompted SFoodie’s John Birdsall to run a post in retort, calling Montgomery “bro-douchey” and asking “you wanted us to know this because?” Today, Montgomery hit back with a photo of a dog defecating on the Weekly and a zinger about print journalists: “Homeless people use you for warmth.” Ouch. But what of Murat’s problems?

Murat’s wife Pelin Celebi-Ariner told Grub Street today that he’s still in custody in the Yuba County jail. She says his case has been kicked up to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement district supervisor and that she and her lawyer are hoping to hear this week whether he’ll be able to stay.
