Capogiro and Stephen Starr: Two Great Tastes that Taste Great Together?

Foobooz has word that Capogiro, the gelateria that has spread its magnificent tentacles up Sansom Street, over to West Philly, down to South Philly and eventually to Mount Airy, is looking to open a shop in part of the former Chef’s Market at 227-229 South Street. You know, just around the corner from where Stephen Starr opened up a little pizza joint he likes to call Stella. Coincidence?

Well, probably. But it got us to thinking - Capogiro and El Vez opened up across the street from each other roughly around the same time. Capogiro’s 20th and Sansom store is just a short walk from Barclay Prime and they both opened within months of each other. And while there’s no Starr restaurant on East Passyunk Avenue - although we do have a bet going with someone that there will be one sometime soon - it seems like these two restaurateurs are traveling in tandem. It’s probably accidental or the result of some sweet development deals and yes, we are we aware we sound like deranged conspiracy theorists, but in this town, it pays to put forth the weirdest version of a story.

In any case, South Street is really making a case for itself being the new restaurant hotness these days. Who saw that coming?
