More than a week after David Chang complained that “fuckin’ every restaurant in San Francisco is just serving figs on a plate,” the chef is facing repercussions beyond ruffled egos. The Asia Society in San Francisco just cut a Momofuku cookbook signing with Chang before the book has even dropped, according to Mouthing Off. Chefs involved with the event cited offense at Chang’s comments. In what may further fuel reactions, Chang issued a Larry David–style apology — somewhere between sincere and begrudging — when he added, “I’m never gonna open a place in San Francisco.” We don’t think the city wants you, anyhow, Dave. Kate Krader, however, offers her support: “Food & Wine loves Chang unconditionally.” So the real question is: Does a magazine have more influence on cookbook sales than a city of ticked-off chefs? We’ll see.
