While all the attention’s been on Chicago’s burgeoning frozen yogurt wars (we’ve seen debates of Starfruit versus Red Mango come almost to blows), not as much ink (or blood) has been spilled over another frozen battle brewing: gelato. While so far the city’s gelato offerings have been confined to one-off cafes like Piccolo or the dessert menu at Spiaggia, today marks the opening of Chicago’s first Paciugo, a gelato chain with a strong national presence. The first of a planned twelve Chicagoland locations, the doors open at 3241 North Broadway, in Lakeview. Read on for a selection of their more than 250 gelato flavors, from the classic (vanilla, tiramisu) to the wackadoodle (banana beet).
