Like a digital version of Bakersfield, Eater splits Northern and Southern California allegiances today in dueling interviews of former San Francisco chef Nate Appleman and our own Eric Greenspan of The Foundry on Melrose, all to determine who comes from the better food city. Both chefs will appear on the The Next Iron Chef, premiering October 4th on Food Network. Greenspan is no stranger to battles or boasts, recently smearing ketchup on the doors of Father’s Office for a burger war that went unanswered. He similarly doesn’t mince words about fancy ingredients or imbuing dishes with “philosophy,” like Appleman so sensitively does. Instead Chef Eric goes all local on us, professing his love for In-N-Out Burger, tacos in all forms, “slutty, slutty” Mexican chorizo, dim sum in San Gab, and sushi from Nozawa. We agree that these favorites helped set a foundation for the best food city we know. Still, L.A. trails far behind San Francisco in the poll, meaning this city has some serious mouse-clicking to do.
