Havana Opens; The Original Alps Returns

• The south-of-the-border cuisine scene in River North is getting out of control: hot on the heels of Xoco and Mercadito opening their doors came last week’s quiet opening of Havana. The dark woods and whitewashed walls recall the eponymous city, while the menu skews more pan-Latin — tacos, quesadillas, and a “Latin burger” share space with tamarind-glazed chicken and a torta cubana, and the extensive tequila list is matched only by the selection of rums. • On what may as well be another planet, The Original Alps has reopened. (In a move reminiscent of Filter, it closed, became a bank, and then came back alive again.) The pancake house still has counter seating, hearty omelettes, and diner-style classics like open-faced turkey sandwiches smothered in gravy. [Thrillist]
