Subway Continues Its Inexorable Advance, Hits 150 Stores in Manhattan

Subway currently has 149 stores in Manhattan, according to a customer-service rep, and here are two more: The behemoth you see at right (about twice as large as pictured) is opening any day now at 334 Grand Street, at Ludlow. It’s on the ground floor of the Palazzo Grey, the luxury building that was at one point going for $7.5 million. A Douglas Elliman listing described the ground floor as “great for café/bakery,” but it looks like it didn’t work out that way. The other is at 112 Ninth Avenue, near 18th Street, in Chelsea. According to The Real Deal, the landlord at that address had hoped to bring “high-end retailers” to the street-level storefronts when he bought the building for $31 million in 2008. So much for that! We’ll see if either of these locations engender the sort of protest that those Harlem condo owners are putting up over the ground-floor Mickey D’s.
