Oakland to Generate Power from Food Scraps

Food scraps have long gone to city compost programs, but now the East Bay Municipal Utility District is experimenting with using that biodegradable slop from restaurants to create methane to fuel generators. They’ve built some huge digestors that now power the wastewater treatment plant, and plan to sell power to the grid next year. Soon, your old pizza crusts could help keep the lights on! [LA Times]
