Two Food Festivals That Haven’t Been Rammed Down Your Throat

They’re not as aggressively overhyped as the New York City Wine & Food Festival, but two other major chef gatherings are coming to these parts. First, the Summit Wine and Food Festival will bring David Pasternack, David Burke, Joey Campanaro, David Waltuck, Michael Psilakis, Aaron Sanchez, and a host of others to Summit, New Jersey (it’s not Aspen or Miami, but it’ll have to do). The highlight of the festival (from July 24 to 26) will be a cook-off that host Josh The Hamburger: A History Ozersky says will be “the most rigorous burger contest ever devised.” Look out, Burger Bash, them’s fighting words! But the festival that’s really going to give the NYCWFF a run for its money is the Gourmet Institute, which occurs a couple of weeks later, from October 23 to 25. (Tickets went on sale today.) Highlights of the weekend include talks with Dan Barber, Florent Morellet, and dynamic duo Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert, plus cooking demos from Scott Conant, David Bouley, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and others, including a sausage-making class from Daniel Boulud and a knife-skills session with Masaharu Morimoto. Possibly the coolest: a walking tour of the Lower East Side with Ruth Reichl that’s likely to be as in-demand as Calvin Trillin’s occasional eating tour.
