Frankies Spuntino Launches a Second Coffee Shop, Spreads Stumptown Gospel

The extra room that was appended to Frankies 17 in recent months (referred to as “the north side” by owners Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli) has been a boon for large groups and private parties who can’t squeeze in next door. But soon, it will serve an even greater purpose during daytime hours, as the Manhattan counterpart to Cobble Hill’s Cafe Pedlar. This makes all kinds of sense: Frankies has long served great coffee made from Stumptown beans, but lacked the space and atmosphere to linger over it coffee-shop–style. So the partners have moved the resident La Marzocco espresso machine into the expansion, and as soon as the finishing decorative touches have been applied, they’ll unveil Cafe Pedlar at Frankies 17, a space devoted to serious java and Frankies food, including Prime Meats pretzels, various baked goods, and Spuntino sandwiches from next door. Hours of operation will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., when Frankies dinner service kicks in. And early risers, take note: There is talk of hot breakfast, too — or as Falcinelli cryptically refers to it, the “Lancaster County egg program.”
