Bellevue Bar Space Reborn: Blue Ruin Attempts to Recapture Tammany Hall

By

The Pony Bar isn’t the only bar coming to Midtown West. Kal Narvilas has teamed up with Michelle Gascoine (the No. 1 bartender at his East Village spot, Kabin) to open Blue Ruin in the storied Bellevue Bar space that most recently housed Why Not? Gascoine is going for an anything-goes Tammany Hall vibe and describes his Hell’s Kitchen saloon as “Gangs of New York meets McSorley’s meets Hogs & Heifers.” When the place opens today, there’ll be “attractive, sassy female bartenders” dispensing flaming shots as well as your usual beers.

“People are going to come here for the girls,” Narvilas promises — and if bar vixens aren’t enticement enough, he’s bringing in a stuffed lion’s head. We got a sneak peek last night while the place was being finished and found handsome touches like a painted tin ceiling, oxidized copper lighting fixtures, an antique cashier, and a floor made from 100-year-old pine from the roof of the Pepsi-Cola factory in College Point, Queens. Sadly, the secret door that used to lead to Siberia after-hours now opens onto a porn shop. We’ll give you a photo tour shortly.
