Wd~50 Kills Lunch, Cans Cooks, Extends Wine Deal

A tipster wonders why wd~50 has been closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and why their lunch menu has disappeared. “Are hard times hitting Dufresne?” he asks. “Does it not pay to turn the lights on?” The restaurant confirms that early this year it scaled back its hours (it’s now open Wednesday through Saturday 6 p.m. till 11:30 p.m., and till 10:30 p.m. on Sunday). The reason: As a cost-cutting measure, they’ve laid off some cooks and consolidated the kitchen staff into one shift rather than two, allowing two days for rest. Our tipster wonders whether a cheaper menu is in the works (“Market Crash Monday? Tightened Belt Tuesday?”) and while there’s no word on that yet, the restaurant has indefinitely extended its Bacchus Bail Out (50 percent off bottles of wine when you order a Tasting Menu). We’re told that it has helped business, though that hasn’t stopped Citysearch from including wd~50 on its list of get-there-while-you-can restaurants: “While I don’t believe that Wylie Dufresne’s hugely influential restaurant is about to close, I do think it’s perpetually in danger of closing, which is all the more reason to support it.”
