Perhaps Alice Waters is more powerful than we thought! Only days after the Locavore Queen asked for an “edible landscape” at the White House on 60 Minutes, Michelle Obama announced plans to put an organic garden on the South Lawn. The garden will have 55 varieties of vegetables and herbs, including cilantro, butterhead lettuce, black kale, and Thai basil. There will also be two beehives (situated near the girls’ swingset!). “A real delicious heirloom tomato is one of the sweetest things that you’ll ever eat,” Mrs. Obama told the Times. “And my children know the difference, and that’s how I’ve been able to get them to try different things.” Could those words sound any more beautiful to Alice Waters? (There’s an obligatory Dan Barber quote in there, too.) The First Lady suggested the president would tend the garden, too, but his to-do list might be a little full these days.
