Obama Addresses Fear of Food

Alice Waters was not the only one talking food policy last weekend. In his weekly address, President Barack Obama pledged to overhaul the country’s food-safety system. A Food Safety Working Group led by the secretaries of Health and Agriculture will examine current laws and consider new ones. Also on Saturday, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced that “downer cattle” would no longer be slaughtered. (Previously, cows that passed inspection and were injured later could still be fodder for the food supply.) And in a Sunday Times column, Nicholas Kristof attacked the use of antibiotics in animal feed, fearing a correlation to the rise of antibacterial-resistant staph infections. Watch the video to see Obama talk about unsafe lunches.
