Brookline Man Took a Bite Out of Local Restaurant’s Insurance Companies

A Brookline man pocketed over $36,000 after claiming to have chipped his tooth in Hub restaurants 21 times, reports the Herald. Tod Schaffer chipped his front tooth when he bit into a piece of plastic in his salad at an unnamed restaurant in 2002. Though he received insurance money from that restaurant, he never got the tooth fixed and proceeded to visit 21 Boston-area chain restaurants, inform them that he bit into a small piece of glass or a rock (which he kept in his pocket), and submit a claim to the restaurant’s insurance company. The companies started to get suspicious in 2006, but it took until now to arrest Shaffer. He’s been released on his own recognizance: maybe not the best idea for a guy with more than a dozen known aliases.
