In Case You Were Hoping Against Hope: The Cedar Tavern Is Definitely Gone for Good

By

With McSorleys celebrating its 155th (or is it 147th?), our minds turn to another landmark tavern, the Cedar. Prudential Douglas Elliman managing director Tamir Shemesh was recently given legal approval to start selling the apartments at 82 University Place and can now confirm that the gutted ground floor will be used strictly for retail. Of course, the Cedar was originally at 24 University (it relocated in the sixties, when its artsy and literary clientele dropped off), but dont expect it to make another move Shemesh says that although the propertys owner, Michael Diliberto, had originally planned to reopen the bar, hes now completely out of the nightlife game, especially after his brother and partner, Joe, died in 2007. A lot of celebrities that live nearby ask me if its coming back, Shemesh tells us. When I tell them no, theyre kind of bummed. Bummer isnt the word. Apartments, located right in the heart of Manhattans Gold Coast, per the listing, hit the market at $1.67 million and the building should be ready for occupation in three to four months.

Update: The owner speaks.
